It certainly is “Hip To Be Square”. Hard not to make reference to this really great song from Huey Lewis and The News from 1986.
My new square hip, or should I say bionic, is slowly agreeing with it’s new skeletal friends, ligaments and muscles. I took the first indoor steps without a cane or crutches last weekend. The risk for dislocation is still there so I’m being careful but it’s very liberating to walk on your own. The walk is far from perfect. Imagine a football player (world football, not American) getting the shit kicked out of him by, let’s say Zidane, and limping off the grass. That’s what it looks like - without the leg muscles.
It’s crazy how fast I lost muscle mass in both my legs. I’ve never had the physic of a footballer - more like a skinny swimmer - so getting back to *normal* should be fairly simple.
The daily walks are becoming longer and longer. Only on crutches for now as I need to practice to walk without a limp and protect the new hip. My upper body is getting a workout and the emerging belly is shrinking (yay!).
But the best of all: the pain is gone. I don’t feel a thing which has improved my focus, patience and temper. There is just a little discomfort due to the lack of strong muscles but that’s it. I can now sit down and lie on my back without feeling the old hip joint drill the pelvis and create pain that vibrates across my body. If I had to choose between a 993 and a new hip I’ll choose the later. Everytime.
I’m meeting up with my surgeon on September 2 to get an assessment on my progress. It’s been a milestone since I had the surgery on 7/27. The first month is the hardest. The next 2-5 should be fairly straight forward.
