One reason programmers dislike meetings so much is that they’re on a different type of schedule from other people. Meetings cost them more.
From Paul Graham’s Maker’s Schedule, Manager’s Schedule
There is a distinct difference between people that are getting things done and people that are managing things getting done, i.e. makers and managers. I’ve always ended up in the managers camp with a day cut up in one-hour intervals. My calendar has usually been packed weeks ahead and I had to start pencil in breakfast and dinner meetings. Until the end of 2005 when I realized that another 25 years of this is not part of my dream.
So I switched back to the startup environment where I could combine the maker and manager schedule. First with a startup of 40 people and now with a startup with less than 10 people. The latter is to prefer as there are no hierarchies, just a network of people getting things done - themselves. And the fact that we are a virtual organization makes it much easier to block off a day to focus on solving bigger challenges, challenges that actually matters.
